Well, I am writing these words on Feb. 10, even though they describe events taking place in December of last year, and January of this year. Yes, I really need to update this page more often ;)
First of all, Me and my roomate Mike drove down to see Damian Marley live at the absolutely stunning Commadore Ballroom in Vancouver. Even though Mike isn't much of a rap fan, I assured him he would enjoy Marley's hip-hop/reggae hybrid, and sure enough he did. It was an excellant show and a fun road trip. You can see some pictures of the event, although the quality is not that great.
Second, in late January I went down to Victoria to visit some old high school buddies. I also managed to take in 4 live shows in 4 days. The first was Young MC in Vancouver the day before I arrived in Victoria. I just want to say that despite the old school rapper's increasingly misleading name, he put on a hell of a show. He's obviously still got his chops going on. Intrestingly, the crowd seemed to be mostly composed of alternative white kids. There was hardly any hip-hoppers there at all. Must be the Flea connection...
The second and fourth shows were all local Victoria bands. First off, a death metal show headlined by the Enchanted Fairies, he he. Great name for a death metal act. They were very tight, and put on an enjoyable show in a genre I don't often go to see much these days. The last show was Victoria natives Pequod who performed a set of loose classic rock inspired jam tracks. Also a good show, but at this time I was mostly just getting drunk with my buddies. Both these shows were at the Logan Pub, which despite a surly bartender is a great place to see a show and have some drinks.
The third show, which I describe last because it was by far the best, was none other than the Mad Professor, one of the greatest electronic dub artists going. This guy literally mixes up a live performance right on stage, and the entire crowd was entranced. I have to admit it was the first time in a while, if ever, that I myself has been at the front of a stage dancing uncontrollably for two and a half hours strait. The Mad Prof had a live singer with him on stage, which added some interest to the show that otherwise would be one guy hardly moving behind a mixing desk. Whether or not you like dub, I suggest catching this act if he comes to your town. It was just amazing, and the spell he put on the crowd could not be denied.
I have posted some pictures of the trip, including some stunning shots of East Sooke Park, and a couple dark shots of the Mad Prof show.
