Eratosthenes
You may or may not know I have a sieve of Eratosthenes polyglot page on my site here. Well, a gentleman by the name of Rob Hoelz has sent me in a whole whack of 'em in the last few days. Enumeration: Erlang, Smalltalk, two in C#, two in Haskell, and my favorite, one in Scheme (which I might add, I tried and failed to write myself). So: If you read this and want to pitch in, please do. Ones I am looking for the most: Plain old C, Ada, Bash (and Csh, and zsh), Ocaml, and the holy grail: x86 assembly.
Books
I have been spending the last several days doing data entry. That is, I have been entering all my books into Tellico, a great piece of software (thanks Robby!) for organizing collections of books, CDs, DVDs and whatever else you may care to collect. I already have my CDs and DVDs in there. I have well over one thousand books though, so it is slow going. I had a great many books to begin with, and when my dad passed away a few years back, I got all of his. It is very interesting going through all of his books, you can learn a lot about a person. You see: my dad was a pretty strict authoritarian, so it was strange to see so many books by hippy-dippy authors like Kerouac, Kesey, Brautigan and so forth.
I remember clearly, when I was 16 or 17, I was reading some Vonnegut, and he gave me the gears because Vonnegut is 'silly'. Much to my surprise, my dad had damn near all of his books up to '75 or so. I wonder what happened to turn my dad off of such books, and into what he later became? My birth, I guess...
Seal Hunt Redux
Almost time for the seal hunt again. My previous post on the issue still seems relevant today. I especially like these boneheads who think boycotting Canada is a good idea. They realize that Canada's government, and a few Newfoundlanders don't speak for all Canadians, right? Where's the boycott on all the European countries that buy the pelts and make coats from them? Where's the boycott on New Zealand for slaughtering lambs? Where's the boycott on Texas for slaughtering cows? Where's the boycott on 'Kentucky' for slaughtering chickens? Where's the boycott on the USA for slaughtering Iraqis and Afganis?
Nope. I still think these 'save the baby seal' folks are mindless sheeple supporting a fashionable cause because baby seals are 'cute'. There are MUCH bigger problems in the world people. Get your priorities straight...
That is all.
