holly golightly
truly she is none other
You may have heard Holly Golightly in her duet with Jack White in the White Stripes Well It's True That We Love One Another. If you persued that connection and followed up with some of her solo work you will have been well rewarded. I have been. This album is a brilliant throwback to the 60s and 50s which doesn't sound dated in the slightest. Ms. Golightly and her band have created a fantastic album which can appeal to almost anybody, without pandering to commercialism.
The sound here is part classic country noir and part golden age of rock and roll. Ms. Golightly's vocal delivery is stretched thin and fragile, but is frighteningly good in both rockabilly romps and reflective ballads. One of my favorite tracks One neck could be right out of a classic horror movie. This is beautiful stuff:
if they only had one neck I'd tie my rope around it.
And from the haunting This Ship:
I dropped the key to your sweet heart
Deep down in the river it lay
You were lost right from the start
And I could not keep you from sailing away
Don't let me mislead you, tracks like Walk a Mile,Time Will Tell, She Said and others ensure that the mood is upbeat for the most part. The music arrangements are neccessarily spartan, and they keep the listener's toes tapping. They also provide a great framework for the vocals. This album provides a great soundtrack for small parties, and will surely prompt many questions as to the artist's name. The packaging contains some great photographs and some notes by Jack White. There are no lyrics, but it is all right, you don't need a sheet to understand Ms. Golightly's haunting words. Pick this disk up, and fill yourself in on what's been missing. Ms. Golightly truly lives up to the title of this one ;)
